Best Ways to Celebrate Halloween  2022 in Chicago | Parades, Ghost Hunts & More

Halloween has always been one of the celebrations that people look forward to the most. The fundamental celebration principles are the same for everyone, whether it's dressing up, wanting pumpkins, going trick or treating, or watching a horror movie with family and friends. But have you ever wondered what unique things there are to do in Chicago?

When the Chicago fall foliage reaches its height and the temperature begins to cool, Halloween arrives to give us all a nice scare. Haunted homes, horror film screenings, parades, costume balls, and other spooky activities will all be back this year to keep you engaged throughout the season.

Additionally, don't forget to visit the top pumpkin fields close to Chicago to select the ideal pumpkin for carving. You wouldn't want trick-or-treaters to arrive at your door without seeing a jack-o'-lantern there. With the assistance of our Halloween in Chicago guide, get ready for the most exciting holiday in the city.

1. Halloween at Basement of the Dead: Haunted House

Visit the Halloween at Basement of the Dead, a century-old historic building that has been transformed into a haunted house in downtown Aurora. It has frequently been referred to as "Illinois' most haunted structure" by Halloween experts.

This haunted mansion in Chicago is open for Halloween, allowing guests to see some of the building's most hidden and ominous spaces. When you enter the basement's endless corridors, you will encounter vicious vampires, eerie DJs, and murderous nurses. You will only have fun and a glow stick with you during this event, which is named the Night of Isolation.

2. Dressing Up

The majority of folks begin their Halloween preparations in Chicago by picking out some dazzling, spooky, and original costumes. Before attending local Halloween festivities in Chicago, be sure to get your costume at one of these renowned retailers-

  • Halloween Hallway Costume Store - Serving Loop, River North, South Loop and Lincoln Park, these chain stores are ideal for grab-and-go shopping.

  • Fantasy Costumes - Show off your scariest side with a customised Halloween outfit from this 50-year-old megastore.

  • Hollywood Mirror - Not only do they sell handmade costumes with personalized themes, but they also stock up on make-up, gifts and spooky wigs.

3. Craving Pumpkins

Picking up pumpkins for your jack o’ lantern is also customary. During October, Chicago’s plantations boast acres of fresh pumpkins waiting to be plucked. There are plenty of farms that offer entire afternoons' worth of Halloween activities. The best pumpkin patches in the city for picking up supplies are: -

  • Goebbert’s Pumpkin Farm - Get lost in this pumpkin maze of South Barrington and petting zoo with your kids (there’s a friendly giraffe here!).

  • County Line Orchard - Tour the kids' farms, apple and pumpkin orchards and stock up on bee yurts, baked bread and pies.

4. Visit Music Box of Horror

The Grand Music Box Theatre in Chicago is hosting a 24-hour horror movie marathon where you may see the finest and rarest films. Their 1929-built theatre can hold up to 700 people and uses specialised sound equipment and 3D graphics to excite audiences to the point of dizziness. In addition to other well-known art films, the Music Box of Horrors event will feature special screenings of Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, The Exorcist, and Final Destination. At drive-in movies, sponsors Creepy Co. give away prizes and promote their Chicago-based Halloween goods.

5. Dead Poet Halloween Party

At the Dead Poet's Chicago Halloween Party, hosted by Life Force Arts Center to honour the world's literary titans, mingle with the undead. This spiritual Halloween party is a centre for meals, beverages, and other forms of artwork in addition to open mike readings, recitations, and sharing your horror poetry. You can appear dressed as your favourite poet and astound them with your oracles and Tarot card readings. Dress up for Halloween with your best jewellery, masks for the midnight ball, and winning costume for a complimentary supper with a theme.

6. Night of 1,000 Jack-o’-Lanterns

This festival of lights at the Chicago Botanic Garden is the ideal location for you if you're looking for a more sedate Halloween event in Chicago. On Halloween night, the garden is decorated with hundreds of hand-carved, vibrantly coloured pumpkins, some weighing as much as 200 pounds. The premium event invites guests to bravely stroll the lovely grounds on the gloomy night where a tonne of professional carvers display their pumpkin carvings. There are many snack shops around the spooky grounds that provide delectable fall fare, seasonal beer, ale, and spiced cedar.

7. Midwest Haunters Convention

Nothing is more memorable and satisfying than spending Halloween in Chicago with skilled and accomplished horror performers, all for free. The largest Halloween event in the country is being hosted by Midwest Haunters Convention and is free and open to all actors, enthusiasts, and amateur and professional haunters. In addition to a haunted house, a Halloween trade exhibit, seminars, and educational workshops, this open event at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center also offer. At this family-friendly event, you may display your best costumes, and the MHC will give you a tour of some of Chicagoland's most spooky structures.

10. Terror in the Timbers

The spookiest drive you'll ever take amid the most haunted forests in northern Illinois is undoubtedly Terror in the Timbers. This lengthy, eerie road trip will take you through captivating scenic vistas of lush oak and wood forests where you may sit back and take in the absolute dread. The premium drive-through service of Camp Big Timber, where you may spend the night in opulent tents following your excursion, is responsible for organising this Chicago Halloween event. There is a "horror light" variation of Terror in the Timbers that entails travelling a shorter path. Get dressed in your bloody costume and be at the campground by six o'clock to get your tickets.
