On Friday and Saturday, October 23rd and 24th, The Mahoning Drive-In Theater’s annual graveyard smash returns, when UNIVERSAL MONSTER MASH X and its associated creeps and creatures rise to terrorize once again on the big, BIG screen!Two nights of phantoms, mummies, fearsome females, and mostly-monochromatic monsters stalking the Mahoning lot, unbound by time and space, with 35mm presentations (with a digital desert) of six sinister servings of deep-dish delights from the dark corners of Universal’s mausoleum of monsters!
Friday night begins with a touch of class and a splash of color, when Claude Rains dons the mask and makes with the malevolence in PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (1943), featuring Nelson Eddy, Susanna Foster, Hume Cronyn, and Fritz Feld (*POP!*)
Then, buried fury, staking to life from the depths of doom! Feel the dusty wrath of THE MUMMY’S CURSE (1944)! Lon Chaney, Jr. stars at the titular terror, reborn on the bayou to stalk the innocent once more! The final film in the Mummy series, with Kharis killing all who stand in the way of his reunion with his beloved Princess Ananka. The Mummy’s loose and he’s dancin’ with the devil!
The evening wraps up with a special 70th anniversary screening of the final chapter in the CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON trilogy, presented digitally, in which medical science attempts to save the creature by making him a land-lubber, and in doing so, THE CREATURE WALKS AMONG US (1956)!
Saturday night begins with one of the greatest Universal Monster films of all time, kicking off our night of The Ladies of Universal Night: Famous Females of Fearland…
Once the monster gets lonely, it’s time for a BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN (1935), in the unforgettable form of Elsa Lanchester! A sequel regarded by many to be superior to the original, James Whale’s follow-up to FRANKENSTEIN (1931) has more humor, more heart, and iconic imagery and performances, with a Bride whose unique look has reverberated for nearly a century.
With Boris Karloff, Elsa Lanchester, Colin Clive, Velerie Hobson, Dwight Frye, Reginald Barlow and Uno O’Connor!
Next, we check in with that vampiric vixen, DRACULA’S DAUGHER (1936), as she terrorizes London, with Dr. Van Helsing hot on her heels, in a special 90th anniversary screening! Edward Van Sloan returns at Professor Von Helsing, who likes to serve his stakes medium sharp!
With Gloria Holden, Marguerite Churchill, E.E. Clive, and Hedda Hopper!
The evening draws to a close when THE INVISIBLE WOMAN (1940) gets up to see-through shenanigans, fighting goofball gangsters who’ve stolen the invisibility machine that gave her maximum transparency in this third entry in Universal’s INVISIBLE series.
