The History of the Falstaffs Museum
Located in the heart of Stratford-upon-Avon, Falstaffs Museum (also known as Falstaffs Experience or Falstaff’s Tudor World) is one of the most atmospheric and historically rich buildings in the town. Housed in a timber-framed Tudor structure dating back to the 16th century, the museum offers a vivid glimpse into life during the time of William Shakespeare—blending authentic history with immersive storytelling.
The building itself was once part of a medieval guildhall and later used as an inn, known as the “Shrieve’s House.” It is one of the oldest houses in Stratford, believed to have been continuously inhabited since around 1196. Its later association with Shakespearean-era life and folklore has helped it gain fame as a living museum dedicated to Tudor England.
In the 20th century, the building was transformed into a museum experience designed to educate and entertain visitors about life in Elizabethan times. Named after Sir John Falstaff, the comical and roguish character from Shakespeare’s plays, the museum does not claim a direct connection between Falstaff and the building. Instead, it uses the name to capture the spirit of the period and the theatrical richness of Shakespearean England.
The Falstaffs Museum became known not only for its historical re-creations—such as costumed guides, wax figures, and Tudor artifacts—but also for its reputation as one of the most haunted buildings in England. Ghost tours and paranormal investigations became a significant part of its identity, drawing visitors intrigued by its dark history and ghost stories.
While the museum has gone through periods of closure and redevelopment, it remains an enduring symbol of Stratford’s connection to the Tudor world. Whether visited for its educational value or its eerie ambiance, Falstaffs Museum offers a unique window into the life, lore, and legends of England’s past.

REPORTED ACTIVITY
The Grey Lady: A commonly reported apparition of a pale, veiled woman drifting through the upstairs rooms. Believed to be connected to the building’s Tudor-era history.
Hooded Monk: A ghostly figure in dark robes is frequently seen in the cellar area. Some believe he may be linked to the religious history of the area pre-Reformation.
Shadow Figures: Visitors often report fleeting shadows moving across hallways and behind doors, especially in the attic.
Guests have heard loud footsteps often coming from above or below. Disembodied Voices, Whispers, crying, and unintelligible conversations are often reported in empty rooms. Children’s Laughter: One of the eeriest recurring sounds is that of children laughing or playing, especially near the staircases
