In 1907, a self-sustaining fortress was constructed deep in the Indiana woods to fight a losing battle against the "White Plague"—Tuberculosis. The Indiana State Sanatorium was a world unto itself, complete with its own coal mine, power plant, and bakery. It was designed to keep the sick completely isolated from the rest of humanity.

The "cure" was brutal: patients were forced onto open-air porches in the freezing Indiana winters, fighting for every single breath. For thousands, this isolated castle was their final stop.

The tragedy didn't stop there. In 1976, the site reopened as a private mental hospital and nursing home, a dark era plagued by lawsuits, patient neglect, and allegations of malpractice.

Then, in 2011, the doors were abruptly chained shut. The facility was completely abandoned in a panic. Beds were left unmade, medical equipment sat in the dark, and personal suitcases were left scattered on the floor. It is a massive, decaying time capsule of human suffering.
