These legends stem from the castle’s long past, including Roger Kirkpatrick’s involvement in murdering John ‘The Red’ Comyn for Robert the Bruce

The Omen of the White Swan
The most famous “curse” or omen associated with the Kirkpatrick family of Closeburn is the appearance of a white swan on the castle loch. One notable version of the story involves a young Kirkpatrick who, upon seeing a swan, allegedly told his father he would soon be sorrowful; the young man died suddenly that same night.
