Built between 1859 and 1861 for Dr. Bellamy and his ten children, this 22-room antebellum mansion has stood at the heart of Wilmington for over 160 years.
In early 1865, the Civil War forced the family out of the city. When they returned, the Union Army had seized their home as a headquarters. To this day, staff report the sound of heavy boots pacing the wooden floors and the apparition of a man dressed in black — believed to be a Union officer.
Two of the Bellamy daughters, Eliza and Ellen, never married. They spent their entire lives in the mansion. Ellen was the last, living here until her death in 1946. She was an avid reader who would read the newspaper by lamplight every night before bed, turning off the sconce with ink-stained fingers. Over the years, those black fingerprints have reappeared on the wall — no matter how many times they're cleaned.
On the top floor, near the nursery, visitors have witnessed the apparition of a Victorian woman. When they go to investigate, they find no one there. Many believe it to be Ellen, still wandering the rooms she never left.
The fourth floor is where most people break. Used as the children's living quarters, it should be the happiest floor in the house. Instead, visitors report feeling suddenly unwell, an overbearing compulsion to visit the cupola, and the unmistakable sense that they are not alone.
Throughout the home, doors slam shut on their own, alarms trip with no cause, piano keys sound in empty rooms, and cold gusts of wind pass through spaces with no explanation.
