COLONEL WILLIAMS INN HISTORY

The Colonel Williams Inn in Marlboro, Vermont traces its origins to the earliest period of settlement in the town. The original farmhouse was built around 1769 by Colonel William Williams, a prominent early settler who came to Marlboro from Massachusetts. Williams was a militia officer who served during the French and Indian War and later fought alongside General John Stark at the Battle of Bennington during the American Revolution. His home was among the first substantial frame houses in the area and became a focal point of early community life. Shortly after its construction, the property changed hands, passing first to Marlboro town clerk William Mather and later, around 1783, to Captain Simeon Adams, whose family owned and worked the land for four generations, expanding the farmhouse and operating it as a large agricultural homestead.

By the late nineteenth century, the property came under the ownership of the Eames family, who ran it as a dairy operation known as Five Maples Farm, reflecting the agrarian roots of the region. After World War II, portions of the land were sold off, and the remaining buildings were used for a time by Marlboro College, serving as student housing and creative space. In 1961, the historic farmhouse entered a new chapter when it was purchased and converted into an inn, marking the beginning of its role as a hospitality destination. Over the following decades, the property passed through several owners and operated under different names until 1997, when it officially became known as the Colonel Williams Inn, honoring its original builder.

In the modern era, the inn has been carefully restored and preserved while adapting to contemporary use. Since 2005, the current owners have focused on maintaining the building’s colonial character, retaining original features such as wide plank floors, hand-hewn beams, multiple eighteenth-century fireplaces, and a traditional beehive oven. The historic barn, dating to the early 1770s, has been repurposed as an event and wedding venue, further cementing the property’s role as a gathering place—much as it was in colonial times. Today, the Colonel Williams Inn stands as one of Marlboro’s most historically significant properties, embodying more than 250 years of Vermont history.

Alongside this rich historical legacy, the inn has developed a lively haunted reputation. Staff and guests alike have reported unexplained sounds, strange phenomena, and eerie experiences inside the centuries-old structure—especially in the original rooms and cellar areas. Rumors of ghostly footsteps, noises, and odd happenings have become part of its lore, and the owners themselves acknowledge the inn’s haunted reputation, sharing stories of bell-like sounds and other unexplained events that even long-time residents can’t readily explain.

The inn’s paranormal notoriety has led to television attention as well. It was the focus of an episode of the Travel Channel’s paranormal series Kindred Spirits, titled “Carriage House Creeper,” in which investigators Amy Bruni, Adam Berry, and psychic medium Chip Coffey spent several nights examining reported paranormal activity on site.
