20th Anniversary Screening!From the director of I Know What You Did Last Summer (and not to be confused with comic book franchise) comes a forgotten early-2000s slasher that never got the franchise it was clearly setting up.
Set deep in the Louisiana bayou, Venom pits a group of teens against a zombified killing machine possessed by evil souls (dubbed “Mr. Jangles,” though no one in the movie actually calls him that). With glossy 2000s style but a throwback heart closer to the “no-frills” slashers of the 1980s, the film stands out from the post-Scream meta wave and the horror remake boom that followed.
Venom may stumble more than it soars, but it’s slick, creepy, and has become a hidden gem for slasher fans for featuring a (somewhat) sympathetic villain and some wild and surprising death scenes.
Whether you come to appreciate this overlooked entry in the slasher canon or roast it with friends and revel in D.J. Cotrona’s infamous “Ring My Bell” outburst, you’re guaranteed a good time.
