The Doll (German: Die Puppe) is a 1919 German romantic fantasy comedy film directed by Ernst Lubitsch. Forced into marriage by his uncle, a man decides to fool him by marrying a life-like mechanical doll instead. The film is based on the operetta by Edmond Audran (1896) and a line of influence back through the Léo Delibes ballet (1870) and ultimately to E. T. A. Hoffmann's short story "Der Sandmann" (1816).
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is a 1920 American silent horror film starring John Barrymore. Set in late Victorian London, Dr. Henry Jekyll experiments with scientific means of revealing the hidden, dark side of man and releases a murderer from within himself. The film is an adaptation of the 1886 novella by Robert Louis Stevenson.
