A space of affinity for our melanated community-finding our way back through Music, Movement, Mindfulness
About this Event

Katumba Beginners Sessions - Routes & Roots: finding our way back through Music, Movement and Mindfulness the Katumba way!

An affinity space to support everyone who identifies as Black, Brown, Mixed Race or as a Person of Colour / of the Global Majority* through afro-indigenous, decoolonized practices: drumming, embodied movement, mindfulnesss, and of course LOT'S OF FUN!

* Global Majority is new term coined in the UK meaning people of Black, Asian, Indigenous, mixed and other non-white backgrounds — who actually make up most of the world, even if in the UK they’re often called a minority.

I am, Because We are” 🙌🏽🙏🏽

These sessions will run through Black History Month and end with the Katumba Halloween Carnival celebrations, which participants will be invited to take part!!

ABOUT OUR BEGINNERS SESSIONS

If you miss the first one, don't worry it's not a couse, you can totally just drop in and have a great time!

Our ‘Routes & Roots- finding our way back through Music, Movement, Mindfulness’ project is in direct response to the racist violence we saw last/this the summer, with misinformation spreading and resulting in violent actions of racism, Islamophobia, and xenophobia, all with a devastating effect on our communities.

These sessions are centered on melanated people's experience, bringing our community together and finding our way back to our roots exploring the tools we know work so well in supporting our physical and mental wellbeing-the Katumba approach to making music & moves together-from accessible Afro-Brazilian style drumming, movement and mindful movement practices, as well as sharings of the Afro-Indigenous traditions that shape what we do.

TAKING PART

Pre-Booking Essential: so we have a drum for you (we'll have a couple of drop-in spaces available on a first come, first served basis but best to pre-book to avoid disappointment)

Ran by people from underrepresented communities-including our Co-Founder Afro-Indigenous @julianabrazilmovement;

This is an affinity space for people who are from the Global Majority/PoC who are often underrepresented/have a harder time accessing activities that support their wellbeing, to take part: people from the ‘Global Majority’/PoC-meaning black, brown, Asian, dual heritage etc.

No experience needed.

Every Tuesday from 23rd Sep - 21 Oct 2025 at the African Caribbean Centre, Liverpool. Those who attend will have the opportunity to join our regular Katumba Drumming & Movement Community Band! (nope, you don't have to attend all sessions ;)

Arrival from 6:15pm, the session will start at 6:30pm. and run until around 8/ 8:15pm (but we're flexible if you have work/childcare issues, just come/leve when you can!)

If you have an injury or condition which may affect your movement or ability to wear a drum, email us prior to the session so we can sort a stand for you/discuss of sessions are suitable (we make them as accessible as possible)
