About this Event

Welcome to gastrochurch. We do intentional conversations about spiritual things over really good food. We set a table and invite people from any background, culture, worldview, and identity. It's kind of a mashup between a dinner party and a small group, only with people you might otherwise never meet.

Here's how it works: when you show up, you'll sit at a table of six with people you may or may not know. Over the course of the evening, we'll give you three questions, meant to get you talking about something more substantive than the weather. You spend about 90 minutes eating, drinking, talking, laughing, connecting, and potentially meeting your new best friend. And then you go home and tell everyone how awesome it was and how you can't wait to come to the next gathering.

What use is a suffering God? Why commemorate a crucifixion? How can it possibly be good to direct our gaze to moments of darkness and pain? Why observe Holy Week?

Holy Week is the week before Easter, when Christians traditionally remember Jesus' final days on earth before he was crucified. The week ends with Easter Sunday, which is a joyful celebration of resurrection and triumph. But through Christian history, there has long been an insistence that Holy Week is as important as Easter. It is impossible to appreciate the empty tomb without contemplating the cross.

This year, we invite you to join us for a special Holy Week gastrochurch experience in partnership with Westminster United Methodist Church. At this gastrochurch, we'll gather around tables to remember Jesus' Last Supper as we explore themes of suffering, sacrifice, service, and solidarity. After the meal, we'll walk into a darkened sanctuary for a quiet, contemplative service remembering Jesus' final moments on earth. The whole experience will be two hours.

If you are celebrating Easter this year, join us first to observe Holy Week. Understanding the connection between the cross and the empty tomb will deepen your celebration of both. We've got a seat for you at our table. Join us.
