Help decorate The Actors Theatre Workshop for our Annual Holiday Parties and Classes for 40 Children who experience homelessness
About this Event

Help decorate and beautify The Actors Theatre Workshop (ATW) in preparation for our two Annual Holiday Parties and Classes for 40 Children who experience homelessness. Prepare the facility for our annual year-end celebrations of The Builders of the New World, ATW's award-winning after-school theater-arts education program, which has been serving homeless and at-risk youth living in NYC's temporary housing facilities since 1995. To sign-up for this event, please RSVP herehttps://bit.ly/BNWDecorate

When: Friday, 12/9, and Saturday, 12/10, from 11am-4pm

What you will do:

• Assemble and hang fresh Christmas garlands throughout our lobby and hallways.

• Repair and hang Christmas lights around our lobby, hallways, studios, and theater.

• Securely install, decorate, and drape a 5’ and 10’ Christmas tree.

• Decorate and hang two Christmas wreaths.

• Do light cleaning - sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, cleaning windows and other surfaces, picking up and disposing of odd-shaped or odd-textured items that cannot be swept or vacuumed. Cleaning products used: Windex, Dirtex, Pine-Sol, Endust/Pledge, Goo Gone, and other similar products with different brand names.

• Light lifting and climbing on a ladder or step stool is required for much of this work. We have 10’ ceilings and therefore use 6’ - 8’ ladders to hang decorations.

Other possible tasks:

• For volunteers comfortable using tools: small repairs include tightening screws, using a hammer and nails or a staple gun to fasten items.

• Assigning and wrapping gifts for children (Saturday, 12/10 only)

• Organizing on-site equipment and supplies to create space for storing Christmas supplies and donations. This would include lifting and moving boxes and furniture.

• Inventorying supplies that are on-site that will be used at the Children’s parties.

• Purchasing supplies, if we run out, or picking up purchased or donated supplies. (ATW will provide funds for this.)

Other important info:

You must wear a mask on-site to participate. Temperatures will be checked.

The day’s events will be videotaped & photographed for our program documentation and communication purposes. Volunteers must be comfortable with this. We will distribute Video Releases to each volunteer when they arrive to review and sign.

Participants must dress comfortably: sneakers / flat shoes and clothes they can move around in.

Rooms can be crowded with furniture and people during this volunteer event.

Due to the popularity of these events, participants who sign-up should arrive PROMPTLY at 11am and stay for the whole event, until 4 pm. If a volunteer knows in advance that s/he cannot come or cannot stay for the whole event, we'd appreciate that s/he release their spot as soon as they know to allow someone who can stay for the whole event the opportunity to sign-up.

Participants with fir or pine tree pollen allergies should take allergy Medic*tion before arriving.

Participants will be split into smaller groups to complete the overall. Please bring a can-do attitude to the work for the day!
